I wouldn't call it Nebraska's best kept trout fishing secret, but the North Platte River below the Ogallala Lake dam is one heck of a trout fishery. North Platte River There are trout in approximately a mile of river below the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) Diversion Dam at the lower end of Lake Ogallala in Keith County. ![]() Lake McConaughy is Nebraska's largest lake at almost 22 miles long, three miles wide, covering 35,000 surface acres. The most serious attempt came in the late 1960s, when the Corps of Engineers went as far as holding public hearings on the proposal. It is not known how this exotic species was introduced into Nebraska and the Platte River, but it is present in lakes along the Platte River, the South Platte River in Colorado and in lakes near Lincoln.
